Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore was started in 1955, utilizing the clinical facilities of the Government Wenlock Hospital and Government Lady Goschen Hospital. Apart from the two Government hospitals, there is a teaching hospital attached to the college, namely, the KMC Hospital, Attavar, established in 1992. Students get wide clinical exposure in private as well as government hospitals that enriches their learning and clinical skills.

This model was conceptualised by our visionary leader and founder Dr T M A Pai. This was the first public- private partnership for medical education and health care delivery in India. The faculty members are highly motivated and excel in all facets of their professionalism like teaching, research and the well-appreciated patient care. Students from 45 countries have graduated from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, and the degrees have been recognized worldwide.

Infrastructure Highlights

Classes

Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore has airconditioned smart lecture halls and demonstration rooms with with audiovisual aids and well-equipped student labs. Didactic lectures are recorded and posted for students’ reference. E-learning management portal assists students in accessing the class presentations, participate in online quiz, submit self- directed and case based learning assignments and connect with their teachers personally. Objective Structured Practical/Clinical Examination for assessment along with use of Exam Pad for written exams has been widely lauded by students. Our institution has adapted to the new Competency based Medical Education (CBME) designed curriculum initiated for Phase I students of 2019 batch and as per the directives of Medical Council of India (MCI) and continued with the NMC directives for the 2020 batch as well. The postgraduate programmes MD, MS & MSc function through a planned curriculum as per the NMC guidelines and the university norms. KMC, Mangalore conducts innovative teaching to impart curriculum. Various methodologies like flipped class, Problem based learning, Case based learning, guest lectures via Skype, Student seminars etc. are conducted.

Museum

KMC, Mangalore has well-maintained museums in the departments of Anatomy, Pathology and Microbiology. Students are exposed to a wide variety of normal as well as diseased organs that have been organized system wise for enhancing the students’ visual learning experience.

Libraries

KMC, Mangalore has an excellent Central Library, which has the capacity to accommodate 800 students at a time. The library has over 10,000 books and subscribes to more than 350 journals annually. There is one more library at the Basic Science Campus in Bejai. The library is centrally air-conditioned and well-structured with separate book sections with open access for undergraduates in the basement and postgraduate/reference section in the ground floor. Separate sections are maintained for the current periodicals, the back volumes and also for group discussion reading. Besides the comfortable seating and reading environment, the library is well equipped with modern facilities such as access to internet and web resources, including online journals and e-books.

The library also has many thesis titles for reference. The library provides a growing range of online databases on the campus network. Access to e-resources (online databases, online journal and e-books etc.) subscribed by the library is also available to all the users (students, researchers and faculty members). The library has provided ‘Ovid Discovery Service’ (Single Window Search tool) to find relevant information across all library subscribed e-resources, open-access resources, library catalogue and MAHE digital repository using the single search box.

This tool can search across all subscribed e-resources. All the library collection and services have been fully automated on modern lines using library management software. Users can search all the print resources (books, journals, back volumes of journals, theses, WHO publications, etc.) of the library through the library’s online catalogue. The library is enabled with RFID technology, Wi-Fi and security systems with Closed Circuit Television (CCTV). The library also provides various research/project support services.

Laboratories

KMC, Mangalore has a state-of-the-art centralized lab facility for Clinical Pathology, Clinical Microbiology and Clinical Biochemistry, having the latest equipment and track system to facilitate prompt clinical laboratory services. It utilizes the concept of core laboratory and automated workflow handling of samples ensuring accurate and timely delivery of patient reports. Most of the diagnostic tests are conducted by fully automated, advanced instruments and are monitored by strict quality control and quality assurance programmes. KMC also has an innovative, modern clinical skills lab where students are trained on various physical skills related to various organ systems, preparing them for real patient encounters. The Skills Lab imparts training to all students in basic and advanced life support skills. KMC Laboratories Services has been accredited by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) since 2009.

Simulation Centre

The Medical Simulation Centre at Manipal Academy of Higher Education is a state-of-the-art training and research facility equipped with manikins (anatomical models of the human body, used in teaching the art of medicine and medical equipment). The centre enables students to gain the experience and insights that are best learned in realistic conditions. These simulations focus on training medical students and health professionals about what to expect and more importantly, how to react.
