BSc Respiratory Therapy is a three year undergraduate paramedical course. It deals with respiratory and cardiopulmonary diseases and disorders. Basically it treats patients with lungs associated diseases. Even though it is a three year course, one year or six months internship is compulsory.
Respiratory therapists work with doctors and other healthcare professionals to evaluate, treat and care for patients who have breathing and other heart-lung disorders. They also perform diagnostic tests and limited physical examination. It teach students to diagnose and treat cardiopulmonary problems and to help patients maintain their cardiopulmonary health. Respiratory therapy curricula typically cover coursework related to the health, function and treatment of the heart and lungs. Completion of clinical practice hours is often part of the degree requirements.
Respiratory therapists are mostly appointed in Intensive care units, emergency departments, Operating rooms, Neonatal nurseries and critical care teams in hospitals. Nursing homes, clinics and health care centres, pulmonary rehab centres, pulmonary function testing labs also offer openings for respiratory therapists.
Candidates can start their career as Junior Respiratory Therapists in hospitals or other public or private health care centres. They can also work in offices of physicians or other health practitioners, nursing care facilities and home healthcare services.
Those who enjoy teaching can make a successful career in a faculty position at a school of respiratory therapy or as a clinical education coordinator for a hospital or other respiratory therapy department.
Students needs physics, chemistry and biology in 10+2. Also, they need 45 to 50% marks in the same.
